September 28, 2009
Social Media sites like Facebook, Twitter, You Tube and LinkedIn are incredibly powerful tools for any business owner interested in reaching a wider audience locally, nationally or even internationally.  Without a true understanding of how to navigate the Social Media landscape, the average person can spend anywhere from 1 to 3 hours per day with little to no return on their investment.

For the past 10 years I have spent the better part of my day sitting in front of a computer.  For those that don’t put in those kinds of hours in front of a plastic box, I can tell you from my own experience that it is quite common to find yourself talking to the screen after a while.  This in and of itself wouldn’t really be worth writing about if over the past year or so the computer didn’t start talking back…well, sort of.

With the obvious exception of e-mail, the Internet has always been used primarily as a one-way informational tool.   If you needed to know the population of Palau or why Plato thought the chicken crossed the road, there was a website out there that had the answer for you.  Well, all of that changed with the invention of Social Networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, You Tube, LinkedIn and others.  You now have at your fingertips the ability to communicate directly with anyone in the world.  Literally!

Think about it…if you are reading a book and have a question or comment for the author, you can actually reach out to them personally via Facebook or Twitter.  Suppose you are having problems with the manufacturer of a new car that you bought.  Your complaints are no longer falling on the deaf ears of the company, you can start a blog and as your community grows, the louder your voice gets.  Never in our lifetimes have we had the opportunities that we have today.

Through social networking you have a lot more power than you realize.  What you chose to do with that power is up to you.  Some use it to play games.  Others connect with old friends.  Some procrastinate while others build multi-million dollar companies.  The choice is yours and it’s all at your fingertips…and did I mention that it is all free!

Over the next few articles we are going to take apart each of the Social Networking sites to talk about how you can best use that power to accomplish any goal that you have.  In the meantime, stop ignoring your computer screen and start talking…you’d be surprised at what it has to say!
