The Power of Social Networking

September 28, 2009
Social Media sites like Facebook, Twitter, You Tube and LinkedIn are incredibly powerful tools for any business owner interested in reaching a wider audience locally, nationally or even internationally.  Without a true understanding of how to navigate the Social Media landscape, the average person can spend anywhere from 1 to 3 hours per day with little to no return on their investment.

By Marc D. Ensign

For the past 10 years I have spent the better part of my day sitting in front of a computer.  For those that don’t put in those kinds of hours in front of a plastic box, I can tell you from my own experience that it is quite common to find yourself talking to the screen after a while.  This in and of itself wouldn’t really be worth writing about if over the past year or so the compu

New Jersey Resident Cycling from Boston to New York to Host Benefit Dinner for ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) Awareness

Saddle Brook, NJ - June 13, 2009: On June 13, 2009 at 6PM, a benefit dinner is being held at the Westwood Elks in Westwood, NJ in an effort to raise money and awareness for ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease, the neurodegenerative disease that kills thousands of Americans each year. This benefit dinner is being held by Emerson Resident Marc D. Ensign, who along with roughly 200 other men and women from as far away as California and Washington State hope to raise over $500,000 for ALS research by cycling in the Tri-State Trek, a 270 mile bicycle ride from Boston to New York.

"The goal of the bike ride is to raise awareness as well as money in order to help cure this horrific disease” says Marc. “What better way to do both within our community than to bring residents together with local businesses for a fundraising dinner.” The benefit, which is located at the Westwood Elks, is sure to be an extraordinary evening that includes entertainment, appetizers, dinner, dessert and an open bar, as well as thousands of dollars in prizes to be given away that were generously donated by Jack Canfield, The New Jersey Devils, The Melting Pot, Cookie Lee Jewelry, Marriott, Medieval Times and many others. Most importantly, the funds raised by this event will be used to treat and hope to ultimately cure a disease that devastates not only its victims, but their families as well.

Marc has been an avid cyclist for over 5 years and is currently training for the 270 mile bike ride 5 days a week, both at the gym and on the road. Although this will be Marc’s first time participating in the ALS event, he is confident that he will complete all 270 miles and three-days of the event. “Training for this ride has been physically challenging, but ALS demands our attention and I will do all I can to help” said Marc. “My goal is to personally raise $20 per mile, so the idea of not finishing the ride is just not an option. Every mile and every dollar counts!”

About the ALS Benefit Dinner and Fundraiser
The ALS Benefit Dinner and Fundraiser is being held on June 13, 2009 from 6PM to 10PM at the Westwood Elks located at 523 Kinderkamack Road in Westwood, New Jersey. Tickets are $50 each and all proceeds will be donated to ALS TDI in an effort to find a cure for ALS. For more information, to make a donation or to purchase tickets online, please go to www.marcsride.com.

About The Tri-State Trek
The Tri-State Trek is owned and operated by the ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI). 100% of the funds raised by the participants of the Trek will support the research being done at the Institute, based in Cambridge, MA. More Cowbell, the Tri-State Trek’s call to arms, is an American pop culture catch phrase originally derived from a Saturday Night Live skit featuring Christopher Walken and Will Ferrell. The idea resonates with cyclists, as traditionally cowbells are used to cheer on professional riders as they race through the Italian Alps of the Tour de France. For cyclists of the Trek, More Cowbell is about more noise and more support for this “orphaned disease” and its patients that refuse to be silenced.

About ALS TDI
Built by and for patients, the ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI) is the world’s largest ALS research center and the only non-profit biotechnology company with more than 30 professional scientists focused on a single disease indication. The mission of ALS TDI is to develop effective therapeutics that stop ALS as soon as possible.
